“I think a lot of people get distracted by trying to do too much,” Markusen says. “The real progress comes when you stay focused on what matters most.”
His path to this point did not happen overnight. It developed over years of learning, building, and refining ideas.
Early Life in North Dakota and First Lessons in Leadership
Jason Markusen grew up in Park River, North Dakota, where small-town values shaped his early mindset.
He was involved in sports and music, both of which taught him discipline and teamwork at a young age. These early lessons became a foundation for how he would approach leadership later in life.
One moment from his childhood still stands out. At just 13 years old, Markusen won a car through a local promotion.
“It was a pretty unique experience,” he says. “I couldn’t even use it yet, but it showed me that sometimes opportunities come when you least expect them.”
While the moment was memorable, it was the structure of daily life in a close-knit community that had a deeper impact.
Education and a Strong Foundation in Leadership
After graduating high school with honors in 1992, Markusen attended the University of North Dakota. He earned a degree in Elementary Education with a coaching minor and graduated summa cum laude in 1998.
He continued his studies at North Dakota State University, where he earned both a Master’s degree and an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership, finishing with a 4.0 GPA.
For Markusen, education was about more than academics. It was about understanding how people grow and how teams function.
“You learn quickly that leadership isn’t just about direction,” he says. “It’s about creating an environment where people can perform at their best.”
That idea would later carry into his business ventures.
Transition Into Entrepreneurship and Building Ideas
Over time, Markusen shifted his focus toward entrepreneurship. He became interested in how ideas move from concept to execution.
One of his early projects was working with a small team to help develop the Quiver app.
“It started as a conversation,” he says. “Then it became something real because we took action.”
He also launched ventures such as You Matter Marketing and Top Gun Leadership. These businesses gave him experience in communication, organization, and leadership development.
Looking back, he sees those projects as important learning phases.
“Each project teaches you something different,” Markusen says. “You learn where to focus and how to move faster next time.”
Energized 4 Life and a Focus on Leadership
Today, Markusen’s primary focus is Energized 4 Life, where he applies everything he has learned about leadership, mindset, and performance.
The business is built around a simple idea: people perform better when they feel energized and clear about their goals.
“Energy and focus are everything,” he says. “If those are off, it’s hard to make progress.”
Through his platform, Markusen shares ideas about team building, positive culture, organization, and motivation. He emphasizes practical actions over complex strategies.
“One of the easiest ways to improve performance is to write down your priorities,” he says. “It sounds simple, but most people don’t do it consistently.”

“Leadership is built in small moments,” he says. “It’s how you show up, how you communicate, and how you stay consistent.”
He also believes that many people struggle because they try to do too much at once.
“I’ve made that mistake myself,” he admits. “When your focus is split, your results are too.”
Instead, he recommends narrowing attention to a few key priorities and following through.

A core part of Markusen’s approach is building strong habits.
He keeps his daily routine simple. He writes down goals, focuses on key tasks, and avoids overloading his schedule.
“If everything feels important, nothing gets done well,” he says.
When he feels overwhelmed, he relies on a simple reset.
“I step away and move,” he explains. “A walk or workout can clear your mind faster than trying to push through.”
These habits help him stay consistent, even during busy periods.
Life Outside Business and Staying Grounded
Outside of work, Markusen stays connected to sports, family, and personal interests. He follows Minnesota sports teams and enjoys coaching and watching games.
He also values time spent traveling with his three sons.
Another unique part of his background is ballroom dancing. He spent over 10 years both participating in and teaching it.
“That experience helped me build confidence and discipline,” he says. “It also taught me that growth doesn’t always come from the places you expect.”
