Mastering the Lightning Network: The Upcoming Book To Understand How This Decentralized Blockchain Really Works

The Blockchain Training Conference has come to an end and it has done so by unveiling a surprise: open blockchain expert Andreas M. Antonopoulos, Lighting Labs Co-founder Olaoluwa “roasbeef” Osuntokun and independent Lightning Network Protocol contributor René Pickhardt will be authoring a new book about the aforementioned blockchain initiative called Mastering the Lightning Network.

The announcement was done at the opening keynote of the blockchain training conference in Denver. In it, best-selling author, prolific public speaker, and open blockchains expert Andreas M. Antonopoulos; co-founder and CTO of Lightning Labs and the lead developer of lnd Olaoluwa “roasbeef” Osuntokun; and data science consultant, educator, and independent Lightning Network Protocol contributor René Pickhardt announced that they will be authoring a new book, Mastering the Lightning Network.

Mr Andreas presented it this way: “Since I was first involved in bitcoin and open blockchains, my focus has been on providing useful, neutral, practical and accessible education. I’m very excited about the Lightning Network and want to share that excitement and knowledge with as many people as possible.”

While his partner at the project, Mr Osuntokun, added: “Up and coming engineers cite Mastering Bitcoin as the breakthrough book that presented the internals of Bitcoin in a clear and cogent manner. I’m excited to work with my co-authors and the community to produce a comparable introduction to the Lightning Network.”

The authors made the announcement together onstage at the Blockchain Training Conference and called for the community to contribute. All three were teaching at the C4 educational event, and Pickhardt and Osuntokun’s teaching sessions focused almost entirely on the Lightning Network.

The third pillar of this new collaboration, Mr René, noted: “When I started to work on the Lightning Network I realized right away even developers are often lacking a good understanding of how the Lightning Network works. I believe we need high quality educational materials to grow adoption of the Lightning Network and consequently bitcoin.”

Lightning is a decentralized network using smart contract functionality in the blockchain to enable instant payments across a network of participants. The Lightning Network is dependent upon the underlying technology of the blockchain. By using real Bitcoin/blockchain transactions and using its native smart-contract scripting language, it is possible to create a secure network of participants which are able to transact at high volume and high speed.

Mastering this complex idea is what these three experts are trying to share, from the very conception of it to a workable software and that knowledge will be soon available for everyone in their upcoming book. Mastering the Lightning Network will be published with O’Reilly Media.
